Utah Summary

Back to Daniel in Utah
By Daniel Lins - 2008-11-20

Short and Sweet, baby.

Flying into Salt Lake City, I sat next to a Mormon couple who was so nice. The whole flight, they smiled and smiled. They told me about Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and how the west was won.

While picking up my luggage (hiking backpack, sleeping roll, daypack) at the baggage claim, I met three boys from Boston who were attending a sales conference in the city. They invited me to share the hotel with them, and we caught dinner together. Check the movie for more info on Dymetri and the gang.

Hiked Mt Olympus and dehydrated. Threw up when I tried to drink too much water. It was grand!

Greyhound bus ~120 miles. Hitchhiked ~120 miles. Lots of cars pass. Only 4 pick me up. Not much fun hiking in desert: Hot, dusty, lonely. Sorry, no pictures. Only video. Beautiful reds, oranges, purple canyons. Slept in a wash. Lots of people do drugs in Utah. I encountered people doing LSD, cocaine, and marijuana within the first 48 hours of stepping off the plane. Tons of alcoholics on the streets. Everyone else is Mormon.

My 8 days of medical training went well! It culminated in a 7 hour search and rescue of two head-injured patients with possible spinal injuries. We had to diagnose their injuries (difficult when one was unconscious), treat their life-threatening issues, deal with secondary breaks and soft-tissue injuries, and transport them out. It was sweeeeet!

Now I know how to deliver babies, reset broken femurs, and administer epinephrine. Whoo Hoo! It was a worthwhile class with lots of sweet classmates! With this medical training, I’ll be better able to diagnose and treat injuries in the backcountry, as well as decide when to evacuate or not.

Mike picked me up from the airport a week early so I could deal with pressing issues of preparation.

The End.
